Artists Elizabeth Cooke, Asa Jackson, James Davis and Chris Ranes have transformed the old boarded up Zedd's building at 776 Granby. Look for more Hampton Roads, The Canvas projects popping up throughout the Seven Cities.

Bike Ride from Ghent

Join Bike Norfolk in a ride from Ghent to Granby Street to enjoy Art | Everywhere. Meet at Blair Middle School (730 Spotswood Avenue) at 530pm and ride the Elizabeth River Trail to Granby Street. All ages welcome.

Tattoo Hullabaloo

530pm - The Scope Plaza will come alive with dancers, musicians, and much more, all presenting in trademark Tattoo style. Interact with artists, indulge in food from local vendors, vote in their first-ever audience-judged piping competition or grab a drink from the beer garden.

DeVonn Francis' “The Prodigal Son”

7pm - 9pm, Mayer Fine Art Gallery, 333 Waterside Dr. Suite #252, A solo show by graduating senior DeVonn Francis. Francis work addresses the ideas of family, place, religion, acceptance and hubris from the perspective of contemporary youth. This talented young artist received best in show at the Student Gallery show in 2010.

Overview

Never mind galleries and museums; this isn’t that kind of show. Art|Everywhere is a celebration of Downtown Norfolk and all that it could be. For eight remarkable weeks this spring, empty storefront windows along Granby Street in Downtown Norfolk will be transformed by art. The corridor will be one monumental gallery. The windows and facades of vacant properties will be the walls. And it will commence with an opening night celebration, welcoming everyone to enjoy the art and the excitement Downtown.

For viewers, Art|Everywhere represents a new and inspiring way of looking at Norfolk. For artists, it is an opportunity to portray a large-scale creative vision for the masses.

Amanda Page Stephens

In 1999, I found myself in psychiatrist office receiving a diagnosis of bipolar disorder. At first a defiant refusal against being medicated kept me unbalanced. Before the new millennia, I decided try to find a medicine to get me straight. Since then I find times where I feel completely normal. Other times I feel like I am out of this world insane. The good days always outweigh the bad. I feel engulfed by the medication though, especially now when I don't have insurance. Sanity should be an option for everyone not just those who can afford it.

Ariel Moreland

Ariel Moreland's work is known to take a stand on current topics in society, and her upcoming piece "Utterance for the Captives" is no different. Raw and unapologetic, this mixture of installation and performance art is a call to action for our city's compassionate people to speak up against Human Trafficking. An advocate for The A21 Campaign*, Moreland's newest work motivates the viewer to stand up for the oppressed. "Utterance for the Captives" brings a voice to those that have been silenced by the injustice of human trafficking.

*The A21 Campaign is positioned to abolish human trafficking and rescue its victims.

In late 2009, while I attending the Trolling Bones 2 show at the NORVA, I took a picture with my cell phone and fell in love with music photography. I have documented many local musicians over the past sixteen months. Some were performing for the first time, some for the last time, and some were reuniting after years apart. I present these images to honor local music and the loyal fans who support it.

Bike Norfolk's mission is to make cycling an ordinary part of life in Norfolk, Virginia. We believe that cycling is fun, healthy for cyclists and the environment, and a viable transportation option. We're building a community that supports fun and safety for all types of cyclists on all types of bicycles. Cece Wheeler

I am a lover of the inconsiderable things in life, a scrupulous monitor of the ordinary. It is the stuff that surrounds us, the mundane parts of life usually ignored, that are my humble delights and daily preoccupation.

I am a compulsive listmaker. Lists are promises of future activity and memories of past experiences. Their redundant and regenerative characteristics reflect the quotidian of a woman's daily repetitive rituals and obligations, the perplexities of domestic despair and the alienated nature of household labor.

This is my life and its labors on display; daily existence measured in the sheer ordinariness and ubiquity of this outrageously tedious task. It is my hope that the work also tracks our common compulsions, constructing the dialectic between the individual and the collective, the personal and the impersonal.

Clay McGlamory

This piece is a physical reconstruction of parts of previous installations with some major visual changes and new elements. It is literally a new memory for me and references the new memories and recollection of old memories for my Mom, Onzie, one of her nicknames, who has been chronically ill with fungal meningitis for 8 weeks and is finally on the slow road to recovery. I dedicate this work with love and hope to my Mom, Onzella McGlamory and to all the artists and organizers that helped make this event a success.

Davmo

I am a self taught artist, born 1960. My art is contemporary and not tied to any particular style. My work can be realistic, abstract, or sometimes conceptual. My work is always changing like everything else around me is changing, myself included. I strive to connect my work on a primitive unconscious level that deals with a wide range of emotions, thoughts, or ideas. I like art that makes you think, but I also like art that makes you feel.

This work is dedicated to John Kohn who died unnecessarily.

Diana Laurel Caramat

"My process intuitively moves between spacial relationships and quality in image. I am conscious of composing a drawing through formal elements of design; However, my approach it that of a sculptor. The resulting piece resonates a graphic image and bold structure, living both as a linear drawing and as a sculpture."

Diana currently works for the Integrated Production and Design Department at the Martin Agency in Richmond, VA. She obtained her Sculpture and Printmaking degrees at Virginia Commonwealth University and was previously awarded a Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Fellowship. Raised in Norfolk, VA and a Governors School for the Arts Alumni.

Elizabeth Cooke & Phillip Owens

Elizabeth Cooke graduated from Old Dominion University in 2005 with her BFA. She is currently working on a new body of mixed media works. Most recently she designed and painted a mural on Granby St. for Hampton Roads, The Canvas.

Phillip Owens assisted Elizabeth with the mural on Granby Street. He repairs, builds, and invents on anything with a motor. He also dabbles in silversmithing.

Erin Schwinn

My work is an exploration into the causes and laws underlying reality. I am dealing with relationships, proportions, juxtapositions, and balance. My work uses detailed patterning to become more than it is. The image becomes flexible. The visual experience changes as you move closer or farther away. The patterns become one thing and then another. The patterns are sometimes inspired by patterns in our bodies- cells, veins, and muscles. Although the patterns are beautiful, they are paired with colors that can be uneasy, and built up to a cancerous amount. I like this duality, this beautiful grossness.

Heather Bryant & Elyse Lovelace

Bird On A String is a collective made up by the artists Elyse Lovelace & Heather Bryant from Norfolk, Virginia. Heather teaches drawing, painting, and printmaking for the ODU Art Department. Elyse is a young artist and arts advocate for the community of Hampton Roads. She is the director of a public art movement, called Hampton Roads, The Canvas. For their exhibition, Elyse & Heather have combined their creative styles to create a multimedia installation for their A|E submission, called City In The Sea.

Keep Norfolk Beautiful

It takes a village....for so many things. And Keep Norfolk Beautiful gratefully recognizes the efforts of the Norfolk residents, organizations and visitors who do their part to keep Norfolk a beautiful place for all of us to live, work and play. You pick up litter, remove grafitti, recycle, ride your bike, plant flowers, help neighbors paint a fence, and so much more! Over the past year, KNB has collected statements from just some of those people, listing the one thing they do that helps keep Norfolk beautiful. The installation is designed to illustrate that each action, no matter the size, collectively has a significant impact. After so many years of individuals doing their part, Keep Norfolk Beautiful, on behalf of the city's environment says, "Thank you!" To take part in the installation, send an email with your statement of the one thing you do to the email below. Additional pieces will be added through the run of the exhibit.

I reside in a white house on a quiet street in Hampton with my dog, cat, and girlfriend Sara. When I'm not working or spending time with the aforementioned, I draw, paint, do freelance graphic design work, and skateboard religiously.

Marissa DiGirolamo & Isabella Davies

Isabella Davies, 9, loves to draw creatures. She is in the third grade at Ghent Elementary. Marissa DiGirolamo is an artist living in Norfolk. She is also the co-owner of Studio Posy, which offers custom floral design. She created the large painting around which Isabella's creatures frolic. Isabella and Marissa collaborated on all other installation elements.

I was born in Honolulu, and grew up in the DC area. Based in Norfolk, my work is exhibited in private and public collections in the mid-Atlantic and abroad.

Over the last 20 years, my work has focused on a formal aesthetic based on the idea that our sense of beauty comes from the natural need for balance. This premise has led to me to create a contemplative body of work that captures essential aspects of form. Though I still hold to this premise, lately, I've just wanted to have fun!

Physicians for Peace

For more than 20 years, Physicians for Peace has mobilized volunteers to educate, train, empower and support healthcare professionals working in vulnerable populations around the world. On missions, you'll find volunteer physicians, surgeons, nurses, midwives, therapists and psychologists - along with photographers, tasked with the challenge of documenting our work. These photos speak to the inspirational outcomes of our missions and represent our vision for a healthier world. Taken between 2005 and 2010, the individual photos come from missions in Haiti, Morocco and Rwanda. As a collection, the photos emphasize the rich and lasting connections between people, rather than our differences.

We are a group of artists with varied talents, who have come together to bring to life a narrative which applies to both the space itself and the city as a whole. We wanted to parallel the spirit of the Art Everywhere project by illustrating the renewal of dead spaces through interaction over a shared pursuit of the energy of life. As the audience pursues the light source and is drawn into the space, the walls of the space reach out in an attempt to seize a part of that energy and together they experience a mutual awakening.

What should I paint? Abstract paintings are models of fiction. They represent a reality that is incomprehensible, an analogy to the invisible. For centuries the unknown was substituted with images of heaven, hell, gods, devils. Abstraction contends with whatever the unknown may or may not be by implementing color as the visualized object. With the absence of identifiable form, certainty is negated, leaving color and form open to infinite varieties of significance that preclude any single meaning. Leaving an open interpretation to individual sensibilities.

Rosa Doughty

Muses of ancient Greece were goddesses who inspirited mortals to dance, act, play music, write poetry, chart astronomy and record history. In this Performance Art piece,titled "The Muse Prepares Her Taxes and Other Banal Activity," the artist portrays the role of Muse in a modern, day-to-day world with an easy, convenient consumer aesthetic. The general lack of funding and apathy towards appreciating the arts has her acting a stream of very mundane skits which challenge the spectator to consider if art needs to be entertaining, and conversely, if entertainment is ever artistic.

The Virginia Zoo

Wayang Kulit, the ancient Indonesian art of shadow play, is traditionally used to educate as well as amuse. In this piece, animals from Southeast Asia are represented as living harmoniously within their forest home, as they have for millennia. These animals are unaware of the threats to their future; deforestation, poaching and the illegal pet trade which have combined to put them on the critically endangered list.

Join the Virginia Zoo as we work to help save these animals and their habitats by donating to the Virginia Zoo's Conservation and Research Fund. You can also learn more about these animals and issues at the Virginia Zoo's new Asia - Trail of the Tiger exhibit.

In an information-saturated world we rely on messages to instruct, inform and illuminate us. Graphic designers supply that demand with an onslaught of info-graphics; combining visual communication with text to enhance comprehension and meaning for the viewer. We come to expect direct and explicit maps, directions, steps to follow to sort out our paths, the eternal dilemmas as simple as 'Where am I?' What if these choices became more cryptic; the crafting of informational messages becomes hidden, complex and obscure?

Students in Professor Janice Hathaway's typography classes were tasked with creating a postmodern critique of information graphics; giving directions, revealing congestion. These pictorial and simple road maps of life allow the deeper message of disconcerting patterns we all face in life as humans in a complex world. Shades of meaning and contradictions introduce problems and contribute to spreading confusion and wasted effort - the eternal human dilemma.

This piece is an attempt to create the look of a digital signal using analog materials. The square dow rods create a pixel look while the natural fibers and grains of the wood create a warm contrast that is both striking and beautiful. The use of repeating shapes that open and close prompts the viewer to investigate the spaces and shapes within.

Video-Gang & HzCollective

Video-Gang & HzCollective members uploaded sound and video pieces to the web and transformed them into QR-Codes. Each code points to a media-based project that is posted online. Viewers are invited to use their Internet/3G enabled CCD devices such as (smart) cell phones and mp3 players to view videos and listen to sound pieces via the codes arranged in the window. Use your device’s camera to scan the code with any free QR scanning app and enjoy the work in your hand.

Bill Collins studies Film Production at Old Dominion University. He previously worked in TV/Film Production at Metro Ministries in New York and studied at the University of Namibia in southern Africa.

Marketing Material Distribution During the weeks prior to the event, volunteers are needed to distribute print materials, hang posters, and inform the community about this amazing event.

Installation Assistance & Window Cleaning During the installation period, volunteers may be needed to assist artists with installation. Prior to Opening Night, help is needed to clean the properties' windows.

Flier Assembly and Distribution Volunteers are needed to assemble Opening Night print materials and distribute the brochures throughout the community.
